The Three Headed Country By Suleiman Ibrahim Temitope

Nigeria was a creation of British colonial. Long before the creation of the entity called Nigeria, the various people that existed independently than had established their own indigenous systems of administration. There were recognized political entities such as the Benin Empire, Bornu Empire,Sokoto caliphate, Oyo Empire, to mention a few. The Empire kingdoms had established contact with one another and without other peoples, through trading activities.
Earlier in the 19th century the British had conquered the different parts of the present Nigeria at different times and established control and authority over them. These areas were grouped into protectorate namely Lagos, Niger coast (also as oil River protectorate),and the northern protectorate, and the southern protectorate (made up of Lagos and Niger coast) were amalgamated in 1914 by Sir Fedric Lord Lugar. Thus come into existence the country presently known as Nigeria.
Through there is archeological evidence that societies have been living in Nigeria for more than twenty-five hundred years, the borders of modern Nigeria were not created until the British consolidated their colonial power over the area in 1914.
The name Nigeria was suggested by British journalist Flora Show in the 1890 century, she referred to the area as Nigeria, after the Niger River which dominates much of the country landscape. The word Niger is Latin for black.
Nigeria should be one of the most united country today but it's unfortunate that even our so call leaders forget the country motto (unity and Faith). From the first no one citizen, it should work toward the "unity and faith", it's enough of tolerance in Nigeria and let us promote the country to be seen as developed. How can intolerance countered?
1. It requires low: Each government is responsible for enforcing human rights laws. For banning and punishing hate crimes and discrimination by state official, private organization or individual.
2. It require education: Laws are necessary but not sufficient for countering intolerance in individual activities. Intolerance is very often rooted in ignorance and fear. People must be educated about intolerance.
Also intolerance requires to information, it's most dangerous when it's exploited to fulfill the political and territorial ambitions of an individual or groups of individuals. Local solution are to be consider because many people know that tomorrow's problem will be increasingly global but few realize that solutions to global problems are mainly local, even individual. When confronted with an escalation of intolerance around us. We must not wait for the government and institution to act alone. We are all part of the solution.
More than 250 ethnic tribes call present-day Nigeria home. The three largest common most dominant ethnic groups are the Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo (pronounced ee-bo). Other Smaller groups include the Fulani, Ijow,Kanuri,Ibibio,Tiv,and Edo. Prior to their conquest by Europeans, these ethnic groups had separate independent histories. Their grouping together into a single entity known group never consider them self of their British colonizers. This general lack of Nigeria nationalism coupled with an ever changing and often ethnically biased national leadership, have led to serve internal ethnic conflict and a civil war. Today bloody confrontation between or among members of different ethnic groups continue.
Until the past few decades, Nigeria had been self sufficient in producing enough food to feed the population. However, as petroleum production and industry began to boom in Nigeria, much of the national resources were concentrated on the industries as the expense of agriculture. Also Nigeria is a republic, with present acting as both head of state head of government. Nigeria had a long history of coups d'Etats, military rule and dictatorship. However the pattern was broken on 29 may 1999 as Nigeria government under the current constitution, Presidential elections are to be held every four years, with no president serving more than two terms in office. Whereby the electorate can cast their vote for whom soever candidate of their choice. Also INEC as a body control the election to be free and fair.
Nigeria observe three national holidays and several official recognized Muslim and Christian holidays when government, commerce and banks are closed. The secular holiday are new years day (1 January) workers day(1 may) good Friday, and Easter Monday. The Muslim holidays are Eid al-fitr (Tabaki and Eid al-maulid). Aside from Christmas, the religious fall on different days each year. Everybody were agog for each celebration as it's celebrate together as one family, despite from different religious believe.
Finally before I go, Nigeria is a great nation and will continue to be great if and only if the political leaders, religious and ethnic groups, the local and the state government can come together in unity. If this can be achieved then Nigeria will record free tribalism, insurgency and conflict, corruption, kidnapping and fraud, as it's said that "one finger cannot remove lice from the head" (in unity and faith I believe).
