Kogi N200m scandal: I’m open to speakership, says defecting lawmaker

By Boluwaji Obahopo

LOKOJA— The member representing Lokoja II state constituency, in Kogi State
House of Assembly, Idris Ndakwo, who on Tuesday defected from Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, to All Progressives Congress, APC, said yesterday he
was open to the speakership position of the House, if his colleagues find him
worthy.

Ndakwo’s defection had continued to fuel rumour of him being favoured to
replace the embattled Speaker, Kolawole Matthew, who is currently embroiled
in a N200 million scandal.

The lawmaker, who spoke to Vanguard in Lokoja, yesterday, said he will not
close his eyes to the position if it came his way, noting that “I am open to
the speakership, if my colleagues find me worthy, though that is not the
reason I decamped to APC.

‘Why I defected’

“In the real sense of it, the present Secretary to State Government and
Speaker are from the same zone. For political balancing, one should give way
to another.

“However, I did not defect to be favoured for speakership; I decamped
because my former party, PDP, said they have zoned the Assembly seat to
Kupa South and knocked me out by that.

“Whereas, the electorate, having seen my performances, are urging me to take
another shot at the Assembly.

“If I was given a chance and lost at the primary, I wouldn’t mind. But for
them to have shut me out, even before the contest, I have to move to
another party where I can answer the call of my supporters and the
electorate.”

On the constitutional crisis arising from his defection, the lawmaker said: “I
am not afraid of that. We shall meet in court.
“Zoning is not constitutional, yet they said they have zoned positions. How
can they expect me to remain in PDP with them?”
